As a review for students before the weekly spelling test, play "Sparkle". Have students stand up at their desks. The teacher says a spelling word, then the first student says the first letter, the next student says the next letter of the word, and continue until the last letter is said. At this point, the student who says the last letter of the spelling word says "Sparkle", which means that the next student must sit down. Continue playing until there is a winner. If a student says the wrong letter, he/she must sit out. This is a very fun and exciting game for the students.

Another fun way to practice spelling words is to toss a ball to each other. A student will call out spelling word. Then call out a student's name to toss the ball too. That child will then spell the word and call out another word and toss the ball to another student.

Play the game "Cherry Pie" with your students the Thursday before a test. Get the kids in a circle. You start the game by saying a spelling word. The child to your right repeats the word. Then the following children spell the word, one letter per person. When the word is spelled the next child says "Cherry Pie". Then you say the next word, the next child repeats the word, and kids start spelling the word again. If a person says the wrong letter, they sit down. If a child forgets to say "Cherry Pie", they sit down. The people next to them pick up where they left off.

Another idea is to have students to use their spelling words to write "rainbow words." Each letter of the word is written in a different color! However, just don't let them use yellow because it is very hard to see! The kids love just being able to use something other than their regular pencil.
